When we're wanting to connect with the energy of Yule we may wish to get outside into nature, or connect with the plants of Yule. For some, crystals are what they feel most drawn to; So we're diving into the crystals surrounding the Yule season and winter solstice, why they're associated with the season and what they can apply to within your own craft.
Snowflake Obsidian - the protective qualities of obsidian, with the additional positive energies of Cristobalite, infusing it with uplifting energies aiming towards success and good fortune. This blend is not only aptly named for the season but also for the energy we may want to bring in. If you find obsidian too harsh, snowflake obsidian may be a better choice for both protection and a better balance of energy within a space and protection, especially useful during travel.
Garnet - One of the birthstones for Capricorn (December 22nd -Janaury 19th), Garnet is innately associated with the wintery energy but it has a fiery nature that helps to balance out the dark, cold, winter nights. Garnet is a popular stone for rekindling romance, attracting new and passionate people into your life and sparking that passion and creativity within the things that matter to you. A passion for your hobbies, work, your home, yourself or people in your life, ideal for when we're feeling rather low energy at this time of year. It's also good for healing spells, and to bring about positive change, ideal for spells for the New Year.
Quartz - Popular all year round due to it's ability to amplify other energies, quartz is particularly usefully around Yule when the energies around us can feel rather low. The natural world has descended into hibernation, the trees are bare, the animals unusally quiet and clear quartz can help magnify the energies around us. If you're also feeling rather low energy at the moment, adding quartz into your spells can help boost their energy and the results from them.
Preseli Bluestone - Perhaps an unusual choice at first glance, but Preseli Bluestone is the rock used to create the bluestones at stonehenge, these were part of a ring of stones set inside the Sarsen stones most recognisable as Stonehenge today. They were smaller in size, quarried from South-West Wales and are deeply connected to the Solstice celebrations of Stonehenge, making this stone ideal for working both the Summer and Winter Solstice energies with.
There are then three stones associated with December, as they are all alternate birthstones for the month. This means they can be used to connect with the Month as a whole, and may be especially strong if you are a Capricorn
Zircon - A highly energetic crystal, Zircon can aid in amplifying our energies as well as balancing it out. If your magickal energy feels floaty or too low zircon can help balance out the difference.
Tanzanite - Associated with self development, enlightenment and growing psychic abilities. The stone is also used to shine a light and gain knowledge and truth on situations. Letting go of unhealthy aspects of your life and allowing you to communicate more efficiently.
Turquoise - Protection is a big aspect of turquoise, especially protection over travel. However, it is also great for working with abundance, success and assertiveness, allowing us to more easily push towards our goals.
There are many variations on these crystals, and you don't need to go out of your way to buy expensive and specific crystals for purpose. Quartz is highly adapable and can be added into most workings, other protective stones can be used instead of Obsidian, and other fiery stones instead of garnet. Whether you have raw stones, small tumble stones or jewellery with crystals in, they can all be used for magickal work. Whichever crystals you choose to use for the Sabbat, I hope you have a fantastic Yule and Solstice, whatever you celebrate.
